Gladys Sobota

Passed away on February 25, 2017 at Brookdale Memory Care of Grand Blanc, Michigan. Born November 30, 1923 in Wayne County West Virginia near Radnor to Benjamin and Cuzzie Curnutte. She was the seventh of nine children-six girls and three boys.

Loving daughter to the late Benjamin and Cuzzie Curnutte. Dear sister to the late Ruth (John) Hardwick, Grace (Oscar) Lewsi, Mae (Paul) Dyer, Raymond (Pearl) Curnutte, Pearl (William) Napier, Edward (Lola) Curnutte, Arthur (Mary) Curnutte and Roberta (Richard) Yoder. Dearest wife of the late Max Sobota. Blessed daughter-in-law of Louis and Pauline Sobota and sister-in-law to Mary (John) Sroka, John Sobota, Walter (Martha) Sobota and Stanley Sobota.

 

Gladys is survived by her loving children of Jerry of White Lake, Michigan, Annette of Houston, Texas and Elaine (Greg) Galazin. Granddaughter Melinda of Muskegon, Michigan. Sister-in-law of William Napier of Mansfield, Ohio and numerous (22) nieces and nephew.

 

Gladys came to Michigan during World War II to live with her sister Mae Dyer’s family and work at Detroit’s Lincoln plant at Warren and Livernois, building B24 bombers. She operated and air drill, drilling holes in wing spars that caused a significant ear infection which resulted in permanent hearing loss in one ear. She also worked at American Brake Block as an inspector until the birth of her first child in 1950. She then was a homemaker for mother of her life thereafter. She was licensed for childcare in the early 1970’s.

 

Gladys met her husband in the Campbell-Toledo Street area between Michigan Avenue and Vernor Highway in Detroit. They were married on May 4, 1947 in Ironton Ohio. They celebrated with family at her sister Grace’s house across the river in Huntington, West Virginia. Their honeymoon was in Washington DC, Gettysburg, Pennslyvania and Niagra Falls Canada before settling in Melvindale Michigan. They relocated to Waterford Township area in February 1961 after Max’s company building in Detroit exploded and was completely demolished. They then relocated to an existing facility in Pontiac, Michigan. They were married for 39 years until Max’s death in 1986.

She lived in Waterford Township until relocating to Brookdale Facilities in 2009. She was able to travel, visiting family in Michigan, Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky. She took trips to Hawaii, Florida-Nassau, Puetro Rico, and Branson, Missouri.

Gladys was a member of the Waterford Church of Christ
