Margery Ann Butler age 89, formerly of Dearborn. Beloved wife of the late Dr. Richard G. Butler. Daughter of John and May Long, born April 24, 1930. Cherished mother of Richard (Michele) Butler, Loralee (Jeff) Butler-Rupp, and Douglas (Angee) Butler. Dearest sister of Barbara Trahey, Katherine Bothwell, Phyllis Vecore, and the late John Long. Loving grandmother of Kathryn, Joseph, Ethan, Megan, Kailin Butler, Alexandra (Blair) Hagerman, and Dana Rupp.
Margery was born in Detroit and graduated from Cooley High School, where she excelled academically and developed an abiding interest in the sciences. She attended Wayne State University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in medical technology, after which she immediately began work as a medical technologist in several Detroit/Wayne hospitals. Margery met Richard Butler while they were both undergraduates attending Wayne State, and they dated for several years before marrying in 1953 while Richard was attending medical school at Wayne State. Richard and Margery were delighted to welcome Richard Jr. as their first child in 1957, followed by Loralee in 1959 and Douglas in 1964.
Richard and Margery resided in and raised their children in Dearborn, where Richard established his opthalmology practice. While a young mother raising her children, Margery developed a keen interest in financial markets, becoming a self-taught investor and avid follower of financial news. She remained an active and successful investor well into her 8th decade of life. She also was the sparkplug for the family’s pursuit of athletic interests, leading to the family’s lifetime enjoyment of skiing, sailing, tennis and golf.
In retirement Richard and Margery moved to Sarasota, Florida, where for 15 years they greatly enjoyed the warm climate as well as friendships, tennis and golf at Stoneybrook on Palmer Ranch. In 2011, they moved to Windcrest retirement community in Highlands Ranch, Colorado to be near son Doug and his family. Richard preceded Margery in death on December 4, 2014. Margery continued to reside in Colorado after Richard’s death until her own passing on August 14, 2019.
Margery was treasured by all those that knew and loved her. She will be greatly missed by her three children and their respective spouses, her seven grandchildren, her surviving sisters, and many nieces and nephews. A private memorial service will be held in Michigan at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wayne State University School of Medicine (go.wayne.edu/give-medicine).
