Allan Arthur Edwards age 87 passed away February 1st, 2024. He was born Oct. 26, 1936 in Detroit, Michigan to the late Charles and Marceline (Stepnitz) Edwards. He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Doris (Green) Edwards. They met at the age of 5 and attended school together at Romeo High School, graduating in 1954.
He is survived by his loving children, Susan (Timothy) Haesler, Bruce (Lynn) Edwards, Clark Edwards and Sarah (Norman) Sobieralski; his loving sister Delores Keyser; loving grandchildren, Monica (Daniel), Christopher, Kevin and Matthew and his great grandchildren, Benjamin and Sophie. He leaves behind many great friends and other relatives.
After graduating from high school he attended Kenyon College for two years. In 1956 he transferred to Wayne State University where he received both a bachelor's and master's degree in Education. From 1960 until 1967 he also completed course work in mathematics over many summers at numerous Midwest universities. His ultimate goal of a doctorate in Education was achieved at the University of Michigan in 1976.
In 1958, he joined the Livonia Public Schools as a mathematics teacher (and baseball coach) at Bentley High School. In 1965 he transferred to the newly opened Stevenson High School where he stayed until 1972 when he was appointed a Research and Evaluation Specialist for the Livonia Public Schools. He remained in that position until he retired in 2000. He also worked as an evening mathematics instructor at Schoolcraft Community College for 52 years (1965-2017).
He was very active and provided leadership in local and statewide organizations. He served as an officer or board member in organizations such as Mt. Hope Congregational Church, the Michigan Conference of Congregational Christian Churches, Livonia Education Association, Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel, Michigan Educational Research Association and the Michigan Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
Starting in high school he enjoyed and excelled in a number of sports as a participant, coach or manager. This included baseball, basketball, volleyball, softball, bowling and golf (a hole-in-one at Dun Rovin).
He enjoyed traveling with his wife. Together they visited 49 of the fifty states. Many of these trips combined her interest in "handbells" and his interest in "numismatics". Other trips involved their shared interest in golfing with friends.
He enjoyed time with his family and was very proud of all their accomplishments.
