Gerald John Helgemo age 84 of Livonia. Cherished husband of Ellen. Beloved father of Eric, Brian, Scott, Kelly, Stacy (Michael) Duff, Jamie (James) Lee, Kelly (Vasef) Sajid, Timothy Karosa, Kimberly (Shawn) O’Neal and Cory (Hannah) Karosa. Proud grandpa of Alan, Michael, Johnathon, Jacob, Brittney, Annabelle, Hailey, Gabriella, Alexis, Zaiya, Kai, Via, Stella, Olivia, Weston, and Cora. Dearest brother of Judy (Robert) Jurecic and the late Wayne Helgemo. Also survived by many other loving family, friends and his little sweetheart pup Gracie.
Jerry and Ellen married on September 30, 2007. From the start their love for each other was evident. Jerry inherited six new children and became Grandpa to three more grandchildren. He went on to love the next seven that came along and they all loved their Grandpa dearly. Jerry also brought his Grandchildren into this new family. Jerry often talked about “His Boys” and how he wished only the best for them. Jerry had an amazing love that he easily shared and showed and he was so very loved in return.
Jerry loved to fish and hunt and really enjoyed his deer hunting adventures with his son Eric. They made many great memories. Jerry learned the skill of hunting and fishing from his Father up in the UP and loved passing these skills down to his sons. Jerry had a knowledge of many trees, flowers and the outdoors that he loved teaching others about. He could tell you that there was a stream up the road a half a mile and sure enough there it was.
Jerry and Ellen loved to travel in their Motorhome and made trips out west and other places, but their favorite was going to God’s country, the UP. He loved seeing the many waterfalls and the colors of fall. He knew the UP like the back of his hand and Jerry was indeed an amazing UP Tour Guide. They also loved going to the UP for the Helgemo Family Reunions. They got to meet family they had never known before and quickly all became great friends.
Jerry grew up helping and working on his Grandparents farm. He loved to talk about those years and how his Grandma V would cook for him and his brother. Jerry lost his brother at a very young age, but had the fond memories to keep him close in his heart.
Jerry worked hard and prepared himself well to have an enjoyable and memorable retirement, a retirement that lasted 30 years. Shortly after retirement he moved to Alger on the property that he had purchased several years before. Ellen happened to be up north one weekend with a friend and her and Jerry landed at the same place while she was up north in Alger. Ellen’s friend knew Jerry and told Ellen to sit with him so he wouldn’t be lonely. She did and he asked if he could give her his phone number. They were married eight months later and had a loving and wonderful marriage.
Jerry will be missed beyond words. He was loved so much and seen as a great guy by friends who knew him. Jerry will live on in the hearts of those he loved. Ellen will carry her “Jerry John” in her heart forever.
Once in a lifetime someone comes into our lives that we really connect with heart to heart…soul to soul. A friendship develops and love follows. With all my being I know that you are my ‘once in a lifetime,’ and each time I think of you I realize how lucky I am to have found you. Thank you for all your love... thank you for all that you are… thank you for being a part of my life each and every day.
I will love you forever and a day…Ellen Marie
