Gerald Konchal Obituary

Gerald J. Konchal, of Dearborn passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on November 18, 2025.

Jerry was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, to Louis and Frances Konchal. He graduated from Catholic Central High School in Grand Rapids in 1949 and thereafter joined the Navy. He was a proud Navy veteran, serving from 1949 to 1953 during the Korean War. He went to college on the GI bill, graduating Magna Cum Lauda from the University of Detroit in 1957 with a Bachelor's Degree of Science from the University of Detroit College of Commerce and Finance in 1957. He earned his CPA and retired as Treasurer of Whitehead & Kales in 1991. He married the love of his life, Jean, in 1958, and raised 5 wonderful children together until her passing in 1998.

Jerry enjoyed many activities in his spare time. He enjoyed playing bridge with family in many long running card clubs over the years. He was an avid fan of all sports, but especially baseball. Jerry was a very generous, loving caring person. He always said he lived for his children and grand-children; evidenced by his coaching of little league baseball and managing hockey, driving to ice skating and Girl Scout camps and attendance at track meets, dance and music recitals. When the Grandchildren came along all that needed to be mentioned was a baseball, softball, soccer, field hockey, football or basketball game and Grampy was there with his lawn chair in hand.

Jerry was a lover of classical and Broadway music. He enjoyed singing and supported the children and grand-children’s participation in musicals and orchestra.

He was active in the Catholic Church, assisted with Parish activities at St. Bernadine of Siena in Westland, St. Raphel’s in Garden City and managing the Divine Child Men’s Club Bingo for over 20 years. He was a life-time member of the Knights of Columbus.

Jerry spent the last few years of his life at an assisted living center in Livonia. He participated in many of the activities -- including sing-a-longs, word games, jigsaw puzzles, and bingo. He made an impact on all who knew him there.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 40 years, Jean, daughter Susan Stag, daughter-in-law Julie Konchal, and sisters Lois and Mary Claire. Jerry is survived by his son William Konchal, daughters: Ann Konchal, Kathryn Freiman, and Patricia (Bryan) Farris; son-in-law Rick Stag; grandchildren Joseph (Chelsea) Freiman, Timothy (Anna) Freiman, Andrew Freiman, Rachel Konchal, Samantha Konchal, Mark Konchal, Hunter (Kristin) Stag, Patrick Farris, and John Farris; great-grandchildren Landon, Evelyn, Callahan, and Gibson Freiman.
