Herbert Chall Obituary
HERBERT H. CHALL, passed away on July 28, 2024 at the age of 95. He was born in Detroit, MI on December 9, 1928 to Emil and Helen Chall. He was predeceased by his beloved wife Dolores (Simms) in 2016. Herb was one of seven siblings, all of whom predeceased him: Eleanor Golnick, Ruth Kemp, Lucille Strick, Raymond Chall, Marion Strick and Charles Chall.
Herb was considered a WWII veteran serving 1946 to 1948 and 1950 to 1951during the Korean Conflict. He then attended the Detroit Police Academy in 1952 becoming a Detroit police officer serving the city for 15 years. He met Dolores in 1953 and they eloped later that year. In 1967 he resigned from the police force and bought the Tunnel Bar in downtown Detroit. After the City bought up 2 blocks for the Millender Center, in 1980 he opened “Herb’s Place” restaurant, a 250 seat establishment just down the street from where the Tunnel Bar was and owned that for 41/2 years. Herb then became a residential real estate appraiser learning how to utilize computers for the first time and really taking to it. The appraisal business was the profession he thoroughly enjoyed until he retired at age 79.
Herb & Dolores lived in their favorite home for 32 years - the Knight Drive house in Farmington Hills. They absolutely loved this home, hosting countless parties and events over the years. In 2008 a few years after Dolores had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, they moved to FL with daughter Kim in Jacksonville Beach, FL, where he remained until his death.
He is survived by three children; James (Barb) Kroll, Kimberly Popovich and Corey (Ron) Crittenden, two grandsons, Jim (Charlotte) Kroll and Kurt Kroll and many nieces and nephews.
