James Roy Gatewood Obituary

James Roy Gatewood Obituary

James (Jim) Roy Gatewood, Jr. passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026, leaving a legacy defined by faith, family, and a lifelong spirit of adventure.  Born in Cookeville, Tennessee, on May 27, 1946.   Jim remained proud of his Southern roots throughout his life and was a faithful member of the Church of Christ.

For 61 years, he was the cherished husband and devoted partner of his wife, Bonnie. Together, they shared a passion for travel, extensively exploring the country and continuing their journeys in a motorhome during their retirement years.

Professionally, Jim had a career as a skilled machine repairman, where he managed his own business for 40 years.  Outside of his career, he pursued a variety of unique hobbies with great dedication.  He earned his airplane pilot's license and had his own private prop plane that he'd often fly to places like Tennessee, Mackinac Island, and even as far as Florida.  He also built and flew remote-control airplanes, maintained an elaborate saltwater aquarium in his home, featuring a shark, and held a deep affection for his beloved dogs, Buddy and Spanky.

Family was of paramount importance to Jim.  He was the beloved brother of Jack (Carol) and Jeff (Dawn), and the loving brother-in-law of Gail (Jim) Litton.  He was the adored "Uncle Jim" to his many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews, and will always be remembered for the fun and laughs he would bring to any get together.   A loyal and steadfast friend, his absence leaves a profound void in the hearts of many.
