John Abbott Obituary

Per the request of the family, for the health and safety of family and friends, masks are required in our building for the gathering and services.

John Paul Abbott (aka “J.P.”) passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 22nd, 2021, after a long battle with COPD.  He was born on July 22nd, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan, and was the first of seven children.

Growing up, John was a sociable and active child who knew everyone in the neighborhood.  He had a paper route, collected baseball cards, and enjoyed playing the game almost daily.  He loved cruising Woodward with his friends as a teenager.  John graduated from Ferndale High School and attended Schoolcraft College.

For three out of his four years in the Air Force, he was stationed in Spain working as an airborne refueling support specialist. While overseas on leave, he was almost lost to a burst appendix, collapsing on a London street.  His life was saved, and he awoke already having had the operation.

John’s strong work ethic began at a young age, waking up early to ride alongside the milkman on his morning route. The latter part of his working life was spent in sales and then in real estate at Remerica Hometown.  He loved working there with his son-in-law, Chris.

For fun, he enjoyed bowling, golf, Tiger baseball, Michigan and Lions football, camping trips to the property up north, family parties, and playing practical jokes.  In addition to spending time with loved ones, he was devoted to his dogs, Peaches, Snickers, and Piper.  After retiring, he enjoyed being “Papa John” to his grandkids, travelling to Florida for the winter, and keeping up on all the latest news.

We will miss his singular wit (with zero filter), military-style tidiness, his one-legged “flamingo” stance, his parade of memorable baseball hats, and his “whatever” eye roll when his opinion and yours didn’t quite match up.

John is survived by his wife, Louise, two daughters, Debbie and Julie, and son, Danny, along with three sisters, Mary Ann, Janie, and Beverly and brother, Dan.  He came to have eight grandchildren, Jacob, Leah, Lacey, Kaitlyn, Luke, Keely, Kyra, Keegan, and one great-granddaughter, Savannah.  He also spent time with many cousins, nieces, and nephews over the years.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Eugene and Genevieve, two brothers, Don and Bill, and son, Mark.
