Michael Maguire, a resident of Livonia and lifelong resident of metro Detroit, passed on
September 9, 2021, after a heroic battle with cancer. He was 62. Mike was a cherished husband of Joanne of 36 years. He was a loving father of Evan,
Christopher, and Joseph. He was the dear brother of Marybeth Reed, Kathy Schlim, William
Maguire, and the late John Thomas Maguire. Mike was a kind and selfless man, always willing to do anything for anyone. Many friends,
family, and acquaintances alike share a fondness for his generosity as well as his cheerful
sense of humor and quick wit. During his many years as Service Manager at Dan’s Auto Repair
in Novi, he helped thousands of people with their cars, and they would always come back to see
Mike. He was a lot of people’s “car guy” and even made house calls (or side of the road calls)
for friends and family. Beyond his clear talent for automotive and being a handy man in general, you could say that
Michael was a bit of an intellectual. He was an avid reader and found enjoyment in all kinds of
literature: novels, history, biographies, comedy, sports, poetry, politics, and current events... he
was always reading. All this knowledge came in handy when it came to connecting with people.
He could hold a conversation with anyone, about anything, and always have a good tidbit of
knowledge to share that he had read somewhere. But he never came off as pretentious, in fact,
he could always make you belly laugh, and he had a knack for finding the bright side of things.

His enthusiasm for the written word was second only to his unwavering love of music. He was a
true connoisseur of music from every genre, and went to concerts regularly, even into his 60s.
He was always interested in exploring different sounds and artists in rock, jazz, folk, country,
ambient, world music and everything in between. An avid listener of WDET, he always had
something different to listen to. But he still went back to his old favorites like The Beatles, The
Rolling Stones, The Clash, and Miles Davis. Music was his to go-to place to find peace and
escape to the world that art connects us to. Mike was also a giant sports fanatic. Almost every night he would tune in to the Detroit Tigers or
Red Wings. During football season, Mike was a fan of the Michigan State Spartans, and
Sundays were of course for Lions football. Watching sports was the quintessential “Family
Time” for the Maguire household, and the glory years of the Red Wings and Tigers were all the
better watching it with him. Even when his teams were in last place, Mike would always watch or
listen to the game and let you know if “the Tigers won today!” enthusiastically. Although Mike will be incredibly missed by his family and friends, he really did live a great life.
His pain and suffering from the cancer is finally over and he can be free. His spirit is still within
all the people he knew over the years, and he will live on through us all. We all need to look on
the bright side of things, just like he would.
