Michael G. Schuster Jr.

Michael Gerald Schuster of Livonia, MI – grandpa, dad, brother, devoted husband and provider – passed away on the afternoon of May 15, 2023, with his wife and two sons by his side.

Born August 20, 1934, Mike lived his entire life in Michigan, spending most of it in the metro Detroit area. For part of his youth, Mike lived with his family on a farm in Fremont, MI, where he spent many hours harvesting miniature cucumbers and transporting them to the pickling plant to be sold.

He worked for United Airlines (originally Capitol Airlines) his entire career at the Detroit Metro Airport. He started with the ground crew and for most of his career assisted passengers and trained agents at the service counter and gates.

The airport is also where he met his wife, Nancy (Matthews), who was working in United’s Red Carpet Room. Married for 55 years, they spent many vacations flying to destinations around the country and world.

For many years, Mike and Nancy bowled every Monday night with a league in Westland and ushered at the Fox and Fisher Theatres in Detroit. And most Saturday mornings (and many other mornings in retirement), you could find Mike on the golf course with buddies. He loved golf so much that the morning Nancy went into labor with their twin boys, he gave her the number of the clubhouse in case she needed to go to the hospital before he got home.

Mike is survived by his wife, Nancy; son Matt and his wife Jane; son Mike and his wife Kristy; four grandkids Atlas, Clara, Owen and Trevor; and sister Barbara Ross and her husband Jim. They’re sure to miss his homemade spaghetti, breakfasts, holiday dinners and homemade pork sausage among many other great meals.

He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Michael and Barbara Schuster; sister Geraldine and her husband Ralph; and brother, Tom.

A celebration of Mike’s life is planned for family and friends.
