Tom Cooney age 77 of Livonia. Cherished husband of Fay for over 39 years. Beloved father of Sarah (Dan) Zimmerman, Megan Cooney, and Frank (Valerie Mobius). Proud grandpa of Jacob, Mason, Hannah and Ava. Loving brother of Rose (Mitch) Opyrchal, Jack (Brenda), Mary (the late Bob) Serio, Marge Cooney, Colleen (Dana) Young, Teresa (Mel) Kaminsky, Geri Cooney (Mark Tanner), Bill (Lorraine) and the late Dan, Dennis and Dave. Dearest brother-in-law of Maria Cooney and Elaine Cooney. Also survived by many other loving family and friends.
Tom was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, raised in Detroit, Michigan. He graduated from St. Cecilia Catholic School in 1963 and at the young age of 19 began working full time to help support his 9 younger siblings after his father died. He received a B.S. in Business from Madonna University and was a proud retiree of the Ford Motor Company after 44 years of service.
Tom was a social butterfly and loved to make connections with people everywhere he went. He continued telling stories and jokes throughout his life, he loved more than anything to make others smile. Tom had a passion for hunting, fishing, spotting wildlife, golf and any event involving family and friends. He had a big, generous heart and shared it to his fullest.
The highlight of Tom's days were facetimes and visits with his grandchildren. The bond they had was very special. He also loved to keep in touch with his siblings and many friends, spending hours on the phone. He loved and was loved.
In the later years of his life he battled an autoimmune disease that affected his kidneys. Due to the selflessness and love of his sister, Mary, he received a kidney transplant in 2015 that added many joyous years to his life. After bouncing back time and time again, he eventually succumbed to chronic illness and passed from natural causes.
