Marlis Brady (nee Riebel) died on July 13, 2017 at age 88. Beloved wife of the late John Brady and Mother of Joann Brady, Diana (Jim) Whitney, Dorinda (Michael) Flannery and the late Barbara Kauffmann and the late John Jr. Dearest mother-in-law of Art Kaufmann and Shelley Brady. Proud Oma of Shellie, Rebecca, Renae, Adrienne, Matt, Paul, Angela, Marc, Skip, Kevin, Matthew, Katie, Carrie and Great-Oma of 18 with another one on the way.
Marlis was born in Erbach, Germany in 1928. She immigrated to Canada at age 22 and married John Brady in Windsor in 1952, moving to the USA shortly afterwards. She earned her Bachelor’s degree from Mercy college, and her Master’s degree from Wayne State University. She taught German at Catholic Central High School from 1969 to 1976. She and her husband John co-owned the Old Shillelagh, an Irish bar in downtown Detroit, from 1975 until they retired in 1986. During this time, they were active members of the Just Right Club, which is based out of the Dakota Inn Rathskeller.
John and Marlis spent several years sailing up and down the eastern seaboard and over to the Bahamas, first in a small ship Galatea, and later in their catamaran Sophisticat. After they quit sailing, they traveled extensively around the country and to Europe.
Marlis is best known for her quick wit, her devotion to her large family, and her Catholic faith.
